I left home Thursday afternoon to make the 250 mile trek to Union County Dragway. It was smooth sailing except for a slight traffic delay on I77S outside of Charlotte. Upon entry and getting the proper credentials I received a fabulous parking spot close to all of the action. The only blunder of the weekend came as I was unhooking my 5th wheel and it made a big move because I did not properly chock one set of wheels. Thankfully no damage was done. I’ll just say this, that’s a miracle. There couldn’t have been 1/16 of an inch between my camper and pickup bed!!! Lesson learned on that and thank you Jesus for looking over me on this.
Friday was paid testing from 10-4 for anyone. I did stream a few hours during the day Friday. Friday evening brought round one of qualifying. We zipped through all of the classes at a good rate qualifying Friday evening until we hit our two heads up classes, Mountain Motor ProStock and ProMod. In MMPS Jordan Ensslin had parachute issues and went off the end of the race track in his #DarkhorseCoffee Mustang. Luckily minimal damage was done and he was able to compete on Saturday. Jordan’s run was the #1 qualifying run Friday night. Next Lester in the Ford Mustang must have had terminal engine failure around 100 ft out and oiled the race track down for several hundred feet outside of the groove. Lester was unable to continue after this incident. The track worked hard to get the oil up and re prep the track.
Now we’re finally into ProMod. The Jocker’s Wild Corvette had the first issue in ProMod. After launching the car around the 60 ft cone the nitrous flames shot up several feet from the zoomie headers and the car lost traction. Suddenly it’s on two wheels about 4 feet in the air. After a bunch of driving and hanging on for dear life the rear quarter panel did make slight contact with the outside wall. The team made the necessary repairs and were ready for competition on Saturday.
Next the Pro-Charged entry of Zac and Teddy Houser had an oil line come loose during the burnout and got the track oiled up again. The staff worked at a brisk pace and got everything ready again. Local legend Tommy Mauney was out next and had tire shake and aborted his run. Our last car of the night was Bubba Green in his car with Scotty Cannon calling the shots. His car was covered in dew as he pulled up. These guys had been in the lanes for over two hours waiting their turn. Multiple tuning adjustments were made during the waiting period. The air came down over 800 ft on the weather app I used. Bubba pulled the Black Corvette into the beams and when he let go of the button the car left like it was on a rail, glued to the track and producing a new track record 3.74 at almost 209 if my memory serves me correctly on this. Bubba did startle me as he took the turn off at which I described on the livestream as 77 mph. He did tell me later after watching my video the turn off was hard to see at night. The night has finally ended. And it’s time for the free concert by the band #Quest.
Saturday presented another fantastic weather day. Low humidity and pleasant temperatures Quite a few class racers pulled in overnight to get a qualifying shot Saturday morning. I don’t recall any issues from qualifying Saturday morning. We kicked off the Live stream when the pro cars took the race track and kept it going all day after that.
Terminal parts failure really took a toll on the Mountain Motor ProStock Class as only three cars could make the call to first round. #1 qualifier Jordan Ensslin had the bye run and Jeremy Huffman and Tommy Lee lined up to take on Ennslin in the finals. Huffman got the better of Tommy Lee to earn the other final position. Ensslin and Huffman squared up later in the day in the finals and both ran 4.16 and the win light turned on for Jordan Ensslin and his team. From the ditch to the winners circle in under 24 hours.
The ProMod field saw 6 cars make it up for round 1. Chris Cline and his team decided not to compete after finding some internal engine damage Friday afternoon. #1 qualifier Bubba Green’s car fell of the pace in E1 and was eliminated 1st round. Tommy Mauney’s car wouldn’t off in the water box and he was pushed off and eliminated. Paul Diagrepont in his bueatiful 1976 bodied #CRCPOwderCoating machine won first round but couldn’t get stopped and ran off the end of the track. Some cosmetic front end damage was received and the fuel tank was busted. He had the bye run to the finals if he could make repairs. The team made the next round after Chris Cline welded up the fuel tank and they were allowed to take the beams for round 2 without a front end because the repairs were not fully dry. Many of you asked how could this happen Because it was an Outlaw event and these guys were the stars of the show, no one wanted to see a final of one car. Zach Houser put together a string of 3.87 runs in his TopSportsmen Car to secure a final round appearance. Diagrepont and Houser squared off in the finals and Diagrepont went 3.82 to Housers 4.09 to take his First ProModified win ! Congratulations to all of the #CRCPowderCoating team. Once again from the ditch to the winners circle!!!
Also On the card were two classes of Jr Dragsters, Top Sportsmen, Top Dragster, 4.70 Outlaw and 6.0 4.70 and 6.0 had good fields of cars and put on some exciting racing for everyone in attendance
Top Sportsmen produced a first time winner as well as Kenzie Whitley took over the seat in the family’s car Cody Whitley, always a tough competitor in the 4.70 class for years looked on as his daughter did a phenomenal job of driving. After many test attempts on Friday to slow the car down for Kenzie to get used to the car, the car was not happy running slow They put the reliable 4.70 tune up in it and it was right down broadway all weekend after that. Kenzie put out several tough competitors on her way to the Top Sportsmen finals where she went .001 on the tree to pick up her first door car win in her first event. What an unbelievable week for the Whitley family, Kenzie graduated from High School earlier in the week and Colton made it down to 4 cars in one of the Jr classes. The family had already planned a graduation celebration after the event Saturday night, and that magnified into a winners celebration as well. Great job Kenzie I’m so glad I was there to see this
